Description
This is one of my favorite childhood comfort foods. My Mom called it Hamburg and Potato
Casserole. Creamy potatoes and hamburg covered with melted bubbly cheese, what’s not to
love about that.
Ingredients
1 pound ground beef
2½ to 3 pounds russet potoatoes (Peeled and cut)
1 large white onion (1 cup)
1½ to 2 cups frozen sweet peas
2 cups of your favorites cheese (Shredded)
½ teaspoon Accent (optional) seasoning sprinkled over the ground beef
1-2 tablespoons cooking oil (To saute the potatoes)
2 teaspoons Kosher salt
1 teaspoon pepper
1 tablespoon granulated garlic
3 tablespoons Worcestershire Sauce
1 to 2 cups whole milk, beef stock or water (The amount will depend on how thick you want
the sauce
1 teaspoon cornstarch (Dissolved in the milk/stock or water)
Instructions
In a large heavy bottomed, oven safe pan over medium heat coat the bottom of the pan with
cooking oil. Add the potatoes and saute until the edges are golden and the potatoes have
begun to soften, should take about 10-15 minutes. Once potatoes have begun to brown,
remove from the pan to a plate or bowl and cover with aluminum foil and set aside. If
needed add a small amount of oil to the pan and add the onions and saute for 5 minutes,
add ground beef and brown. Once the beef is browned add salt, pepper and ground garlic
and the Worcestershire Sauce and stir to incorporate. Add the potatoes and sweet peas and
stir to incorporate. Add 1 teaspoon cornstarch to 1 cup of the liquid that you are using,
stirring till dissolved and slowly drizzle over ground while stirring until well incorporated
and the sauce begins to thicken. If you want a thinner sauce add additional liquid. Sprinkle
the cheese evenly over the top and bake in a preheated 350 degree oven for 20-25 minutes
or until the potatoes are cooked thru and top is golden brown . Allow the casserole to cool
down slightly (10 minutes or so) and serve.
